CBSA Codes with MSA Codes Database

Core-Based Statistical Areas + Metropolitan Statistical Areas

Core-Based Statistical Areas are geographic locations neighboring urban areas of 10,000+ population and/or are socioeconomically tied to the urban center by commute proximity. Prior to the year 2000, these were collectively known as MSAs -- Metropolitan Statistical Areas. MSAs only covered metro areas of 50,000 people or more. An exclusive feature of GreatData CBSA Data is that the population statistics are calculated annually. Therefore, the CBSA rank is based on a more recent population than typical census data classifications.

This product includes both CBSAs and MSAs (Metropolitan Statistical Areas)

Core-Based Statistical Areas - CBSA

Starting year 2000, the Office of Management and Budget changed the way market areas are defined under the acronym CBSA (formerly know by SMSAs, MSAs, CMSAs, etc.). Immediately prior to year 2000, (MSA) codes covered about 80 percent of the country, where as the new CBSA codes cover about 93 percent. There are two major sub-classes in CBSA Codes:
  • Population from 10,000 up to 50,000 people (a.k.a. Micropolitan Statistical Areas)
  • Population of 50,000 or more people (a.k.a. Metropolitan Statistical Areas)
